Work was cancelled Monday and today because of Hurricane Sandy. So my roommates and I stayed home and had the most productive time known to man.

On Sunday evening, I made granola with raisins, apricots, sunflower and flax seeds, bananas, buckwheat honey, carrot juice and oats. On Monday, we spent all day in pajamas and ate granola for breakfast, then watched the Oscar-nominated film "Monsieur Lazhar." It just recently appeared on Netflix.

Watching it as a teacher and as an immigrant was very moving. Monsieur Lazhar comes to Montreal from Algeria and applies for a job at an elementary school after a teacher committed suicide.

Claire, a coworker and love interest tells him over dinner that he should share his immigrant experience with his students. He says no. She continues.

"But exile is another kind of journey."
"No, Claire. For most immigrants, it's a trip without papers, uprooted to a country whose culture is foreign."

Immigration often isn't a glorious Columbus-like voyage of discovery.

Before lunch, I started learning a new song on guitar (Obla di, Obla da). For lunch, we made pizza with sausage, bacon, asparagus, bechamel sauce, gouda, and home-made dough.

Then, we decided something had to be done about our two pumpkins. We researched (I love Martha Stewart), and sketched, and carved using everything from knives to nails, to pushpins to a screwdriver. The result (below) was an owl perched in the tree. And this morning, I roasted the pumpkin seeds. I feel grateful to have had this extra time off work.
